Frequently Asked Questions

  • The main difference between the two is that a psychiatrist has trained as a medical doctor and can prescribe medication, whereas a psychologist is not a medical doctor and cannot prescribe medication. Both are trained to understand how your brain works, how you think, and how you behave.

Psychologists are registered health professionals who specialize in human behavior and may have further training in specific areas like clinical psychology or neuropsychology. Psychiatrists, on the other hand, are medical doctors who have specialized in diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They can prescribe medication and use a combination of treatments, including counseling or admitting patients to the hospital if needed. When an individual or family meets a certain threshold of out-of-pocket payments in a calendar year, you become eligible for higher Medicare benefits.
